Monday, September 1, 2014 (Peter Hope Lake Recreation Site, Quilchena, BC)

The howling of coyotes woke us through the night...luckily we were able to get back to sleep, though! We hadn't heard them for a few nights but last week, they were quite active through the night.

It was a very chilly start to the day again today...the furnace was on to take the chill off...fall is definitely in the air!

At about 10:00 Deb and Ray (and Freya) came over to stay goodbye....and after hugs and handshakes, they were on their way. We'll catch up with them again in a few weeks when they join us at Fort Langley.
Here is Deb directing as Ray pulls out of their site...
 Bye Ray!

Bye Deb (they will connect the car down the hill before they hit the highway)....

We decided to go on one last quad ride before leaving the area. Steve wanted to see if we could make it to where the forest fire had been last week. Deb and I had passed a road (off Peter Hope Road) that looked like it was likely where the tanker truck had gone, so we drove down to it. Unfortunately, it ended up being a gated road onto private property, Stump Lake Ranch. So we ended up taking every trail that went off the main road. All either dead-ended or were gated but we had a great time just exploring.

The road to a geocache had been deactivated...entry not allowed to protect grasslands. We were going to try hiking up to it but I read the last log entry for it...they couldn't find it and the last time it had been found was over 2 years ago, so we didn't bother...

A bit of a dip through the creek bed as we left the main road and headed up this trail...

Break time!

The trail ended up being gated quite a way in, so we turned around....back across the creek bed...

Then we took a trail that went all of the way around Peter Hope and Little Peter Hope lakes...beautiful area!

Here we are coming down towards Little Peter Hope Lake (on the opposite side of the lake from our previous visit)...

There is an area to camp on the trail to the left...

And another nice little camping spot...

And now we are on the other side of Little Peter Hope Lake...

A large campsite here...

Our campground in the distance on Peter Hope Lake...
...and a close-up...
 Time to head home...

We were back home about 2 hours later...another great ride in the area! After putting our stuff away, Steve went to work...time to put the remaining spare gas for the quads into a single container for the generator and load the quads back into the truck.

Yee...haw!!
 Watch the head...

After the quads were put away, Steve puttered around outside putting things away and when he noticed that the back of the truck was low, he thought he'd start the truck up. There are lots of mice, squirrels, and chipmunks around so hopefully we don't have a chewed air line. Well, the truck wouldn't start...he just got a clicking sound...the batteries are dead! Isn't that just great?! No point worrying about it now. The forecast for tomorrow is rain so on Wednesday he'll hookup the battery charger and hopefully get it started. If it does start though, he's not sure it'll  hold a charge until we leave on Thursday. If not then we'll have to get a jump start from somebody. The truck is a 2008 so I suppose the batteries (2 of them) are about 6 years old....Ka-Ching! $$$$

It was another very windy day out on the lake...no evening fish for Steve tonight!

The campground has really cleared out after the long weekend...

With all of the empty sites around, we were surprised when this truck and camper pulled in right beside us at about dinner time! We also had the cows come for a visit...

Getting a little too close to the satellite dish! Steve had to scare them away after the calf started licking the orange tie down strap...

We sat outside for a bit but the strong winds were very annoying, so we went inside. The forecast is for a major rain day tomorrow, so we will likely be hunkered down until the weather improves on Wednesday. Then it will be pack up day.
