Wednesday, July 17, 2013 (Travel to Dawson City, Yukon)

We were up bright and early...and on the road by 7:00 a.m. just as planned.  Unfortunately, it was a cloudy morning with the promise of rain in the forecast...

This area obviously had a forest fire at some point...now the fireweed is coming through...just stunning!

Of course as we got higher into the mountains, we were eventually in the clouds...

Not going to see much here today!

We stopped briefly in Chicken, Alaska for a cup of coffee.  We will stop on our way back and spend more time and take more pictures...so stay tuned...

We are certainly glad that we decided not to tow our fifth-wheel on this highway!

Then two more tankers!

This is the highway maintenance facility...they aren't doing a very good job...

This is the condition of the road on either side of the road maintenance facility for miles!

South Fork River...

Walker Fork...

Motorcycle? No thanks!  We actually passed quite a number of them...

There are a number of miners still mining the creeks for gold...

This spot was very slick...the tires were spinning.  Steve wasn't sure we were going to make it...

Yikes...can't see much up here...at times we had about 25 yards of visibility...

This is a hearty fellow...riding his bicycle...sheesh!

We stopped at a rest stop not far from Dawson City...

Poor Buster...he has never been this dirty!

The Yukon River...

Dawson City, Yukon...

Approaching the ferry "terminal"....

The ferry is just on its way to the other side...

Even though we saw all types of RV's travelling on this road we were extremely glad we didn't bring ours. I'm sure that most regretted their decision to do so unless they were in a rental.  Google Maps said our trip should have taken us about 4 1/2 hours...it took us 7!

A paddle-wheeler went by...

It wasn't long before the ferry was back...

Yup...it just "docks" on the beach...I guess they can't build proper facilities because of the winter ice breakup...

Now it's our turn to board...

We're about to "dock"...

Off, we go...

The main street...First Street...

We turned off First Street onto Harper...our hotel is on the corner of Fifth Street and Harper...

The Westmark Inn, Dawson City...

Immediately after checking in and taking our stuff into the room (405 in the Jack London Building), we headed out to see Dawson City! Other than First Street which is the only paved road, all other roads are gravel with boardwalks...

Steve took lots and lots of pictures of this quaint town...

Road maintenance...

 Visitors Centre...

We considered taking a 1 1/2 hour ride on the paddle-wheeler but at $54/person, we decided it was just too pricey for us...

We are surprised by the number of vehicles from Europe...a Volvo

Whew...all this sightseeing is exhausting!  Time for a beer at the Downtown Hotel...

...and then dinner at Klondike Kate's...

...and finally...a nightcap at the Keno Lounge in our hotel...

The weather forecast for tomorrow is for sunshine...much better weather for exploring the area.
