Friday, January 4, 2013 (Travel to McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Fountain Hills, AZ)

We had a relaxing start to the day…after the last two early mornings, it was nice not to have to rush.  Check out time here at Eagle View is 11:00 and it was just about 11:00 when we pulled out.

Our drive today was all of 15 miles through Fountain Hills to McDowell Mountain Regional Park.  After checking in at the main gate, we made our way to the campground and site #10…yikes, not sure if we will be able to back into this site.  It has quite a dip before leveling off.  As it turned out, we just made it…with less than an inch of clearance on the bike rack at the back of the trailer before it leveled out…whew!  I really didn't think we were going to make it!

It was just before 2:00 by the time we got all set up…and time to go grocery shopping.  Since we had been here last year, I knew where Safeway was so I headed out in the truck by myself into Fountain Hills…leaving Steve here to rearrange the basement so he could pack the suitcases away and generally putter around…something he would much rather do than go shopping with me!

Just over two hours later, I was back…Steve said he was starting to worry about me…but I had to re-stock and…well, I just like to take my time when I am shopping on my own.  After putting the groceries away, we went for a bit of a walk.  Steve wanted a “real” campfire tonight so we needed to buy some firewood from the camp host.  Unfortunately, the host “on duty” was away (hmmm…so why wasn't the other camp host on duty?) so we left a note asking for some firewood to be delivered to our site and continued our walk.

It was going on 5:00 by this time and since it didn't appear that the camp host was back yet, Steve put $12 into an envelope and walked down to the camp host site and picked up the two bundles of wood that were sitting out.

We sat out enjoying the campfire and roasted hot-dogs for dinner.  Once the sun was down, it really got cold out (40F/4.4C) so once the two bundles of wood was gone, we headed inside to warm up in front of the fireplace.  It’s great that the campground has electric (and water) hookups!

Tomorrow, we are re-connecting with a couple that we met at the RV-Dreams Rally in Oregon last September.  Monte and Rose are staying in Apache Junction and are driving up to meet us for lunch…and a hike.  Looking forward to seeing them!
